[FWO] Opening oproep voor mobiliteitsprojecten met China (NSFC) | Opening call for joint mobility projects with China (NSFC)
Het FWO kondigt de opening aan van een nieuwe oproep voor mobiliteitsprojecten met de National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Het FWO bereikte opnieuw een overeenkomst voor het financieren van mobiliteitsprojecten met een duur van twee jaar (01/01/2027 – 31/12/2028).
Voor de oproep met deadline in 2026 zijn projectaanvragen voor fundamenteel basisonderzoek mogelijk binnen de natuurwetenschappen, ingenieurswetenschappen, managementwetenschappen en medische wetenschappen. Meer concreet:
- Wiskunde en fysica
- Chemie Life sciences
- Aardwetenschappen
- Ingenieurs- en materiaalwetenschappen
- Informatica
- Management
- Gezondheidswetenschappen
Deze projecten dienen bovendien specifieke aandacht voor junior onderzoekers te hebben aan zowel Vlaamse (FWO) als Chinese (NSFC) zijde: aanvragen kunnen enkel worden ingediend door onderzoekers (promotor-woordvoerders) die hun eerste doctoraatsdiploma maximum 12 jaar vóór de uiterste indiendatum (08/06/2026) hebben behaald; De uitwisselingen kunnen alleen maar worden uitgevoerd door predoctorale onderzoekers of onderzoekers die hun eerste doctoraatsdiploma maximum 12 jaar vóór de uiterste indiendatum (08/06/2026) hebben behaald.

NIEUW:
In het kader van deze oproep met NSFC China kan je aan Vlaamse (FWO-)zijde slechts 1 maal optreden als promotor-woordvoerder of co-promotor.
Gezamenlijke projectvoorstellen moeten gelijktijdig worden ingediend bij FWO door een onderzoeksgroep uit Vlaanderen (digitaal via het FWO e-loket gebruikmakend van het correcte specifieke aanvraagformulier onder de sectie ‘International collaboration / Mobility projects’) en bij NSFC door een onderzoeksgroep uit China.

NIEUW:
De betrokken onthaalinstelling aan Vlaamse zijde zal via de FWO-instellingentool gevraagd worden formele institutionele toestemming (consent) te geven voor de aanvraag. Voor aanvragen in het kader van mobiliteitsprojecten wordt er dus vanaf nu een specifieke actie vereist van de betrokken onthaalinstelling, en betreft het niet langer louter een notificatie.
Binnen deze mobiliteitsprojecten staat elke financierder in voor de volledige kosten van de eigen onderzoekers:
- Het FWO betaalt aan de onderzoekers uit Vlaanderen een verblijfsvergoeding van € 66/dag (of max. € 1.650 per maand) bovenop de verplaatsingskosten, te boeken bij een door het FWO gemachtigd reisagentschap.
- NSFC voorziet per project een totaalbedrag van max. 150 000 RMB (ong. € 18.700) voor de totale looptijd van twee jaar. Deze financiering dient gebruikt te worden voor de internationale reiskosten van de Chinese onderzoeker(s) naar/vanuit België en diens verblijfs- en logementskosten.
Project indienen (deadline):
De oproep staat open tot en met 8 juni 2026 (17u00 Belgische tijd). De projecten zullen starten op 1 januari 2027.

NIEUW:
Reeds sinds 2025 bevat het online FWO-aanvraagformulier een specifieke tab 'Kennisveiligheid'. Aanvragers dienen op basis van het onderwerp van hun onderzoeksvoorstel, betrokken landen en buitenlandse partners een set van vragen te beantwoorden die het risico inschat wat betreft o.a. ongewenste kennisoverdracht, misbruik van onderzoeksresultaten en/of inmenging. Indien daaruit blijkt dat een goedkeuring inzake kennisveiligheid van de onthaalinstelling nodig is, neem dan onmiddellijk en liefst vóór het indienen van jouw aanvraag, contact op met de contactpersonen betreffende kennisveiligheid binnen jouw onthaalinstelling. Op dinsdag 29/04/2025 vond er een specifieke online infosessie plaatsvinden inzake het FWO-kennisveiligheidsbeleid. De presentatie kan hier worden geconsulteerd.

The Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) announces the launch of a new call for joint mobility projects with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
The FWO has reached again an agreement to fund mobility projects with a duration of two years (01/01/2027 – 31/12/2028). For the 2026 call project proposals are possible for fundamental basic research within the fields of natural sciences, engineering sciences, management sciences and medical sciences. More precisely:
- Mathematical & physical sciences
- Chemical sciences
- Life sciences
- Earth sciences
- Engineering & material sciences
- Information sciences
- Management sciences
- Health sciences
Moreover, these projects should have special attention to junior researchers at Flemish (FWO) as well as at Chinese side (NSFC):
- Proposals can only be submitted by researchers (supervisor-spokespersons) who have obtained their first PhD degree maximally 12 years before the submission deadline (08/06/2026);
- The exchanges can only be performed by predoctoral researchers or researchers who have obtained their first PhD degree maximally 12 years before the submission deadline (08/06/2026).

NEW: In the framework of this call with NSFC China, you can only act once as a supervisor-spokesperson or co-supervisor at Flemish (FWO) side.
Joint project proposals have to be submitted simultaneously at FWO by a research group from Flanders (digitally through the FWO e-loket by using the correct specific application form under the section ‘International collaboration / Mobility projects’) and at NSFC by a research group from China.

NEW:
The involved host institution at Flemish side will have to give, via their FWO institution tool, formal institutional consent for the application. For applications in the framework of joint mobility projects it will as such no longer concern a notification, but a specific action will be required by the host institution involved.
Within these joint mobility projects each funding agency bears the full costs of its own researchers:
- FWO offers researchers from Flanders a daily living allowance of € 66 (or max. €1,650 per month) on top of the travel expenses, to be booked through a travel agency authorized by the FWO.
- NSFC provides per project a total amount of max. 150,000 RMB (approx. € 18,700) for the total duration of two years. This funding should be used for the international travel costs of the Chinese researcher(s) towards/from Belgium and their accommodation and living expenses.
Submissions
Submission is possible until the 8th of June 2026 (5 pm Belgian time). Projects will start on the 1st of January 2027.

NEW:
Since 2025 the online FWO application form contains a specific tab 'Research Security'. Applicants are required, based on the topic of their research proposal, involved countries and foreign partners, to complete a set of questions regarding unwanted knowledge transfer, misuse of research results and/or interference. If as a result of this, your project proposal needs a research security approval, please contact the dedicated contact persons at your host institution immediately, preferably before the submission of your proposal. On Tuesday 29/04/2025 a specific online info session on FWO’s research security policy was organized. The presentation can be found here.
