Grove Dictionary of Art

Grove Art Online is a scholarly art encyclopedia, updated regularly and covering global art and architecture from prehistory to present day. Includes peer-reviewed articles contributed by nearly 7,000 scholars from around the world, accompanied by images, bibliographies, and links to additional resources. Grove Art Online is part of Oxford Art Online.

Grove Art is a living resource, with scholars and specialists from around the world continually reviewing and updating existing content and contributing new articles. In addition to the large number of entries on the visual arts, Grove Art features a host of learning resources that organize the content for use in art and art history classrooms, making Grove Art an important source for scholars and students alike.

Access

Make sure you are connected to the UGent network via Athena. Search for the database in the Ghent University library catalogue lib.ugent.be. Click on the link "view online" and you have access to the Grove Dictionary of Art.

Search Tips

With basic search, you can filter search results after conducting a search. Advanced search allows you to choose more targeted search criterea before conducting a search.

In Tools and Resources you find free resources to be used for research and teaching, created by scholars and specialists for Oxford Art Online, such as: Collection guides, Subject guides, MoMA/Grove Art Resources for Educators, Timelines of World Art, Podcasts and Interviews, Italian Renaissance Learning Resources and Abbreviations Lists.

Export

In the right hand corner of an article you will find different ways for saving or downloading the article or citation:

save a pdf of the article on your computer. Once it's saved on your computer, you can attach it to your citation in Endnote.
save the link to the article in "My profile". To use this you have to create a free personal profile.
to export a citation to EndNote: click on the third tile (the pencil), choose EndNote to import your citation to EndNote, click in the pop-up on "open" to import the citation in EndNote . Don't forget: to be able to use EndNote on Athena, you have to start all your other applications (browser, Word, ...) in Athena.

Alerts & saving searches

Create a personal profile to allow you to save content and searches for future visits.

You can choose to save separate articles in "My Profile", you can also save a citation in EndNote. You can save a full search result to "My Profile". Via "edit" you can indicate that you want to be informed if there are new search results for the same search query.
