Research assessment: tips and tricks for new evaluators
Ghent University (UGent) is committed to evaluating research in a responsible manner. Anyone asked by Ghent University to assess research – particularly in the context of the Special Research Fund (BOF) – can rely on the “Guidelines for research evaluators” as a practical tool for applying the principles of responsible evaluation.
In addition to these guidelines, a few general rules of thumb for writing an evaluation can help new evaluators get started:
- Ensure that your feedback and comments align with the given evaluation criteria.
- Make sure your text is clear and concise.
- Be specific and avoid vague statements such as “the methodology is weak” (explain what is weak about it).
- Be critical, but do not focus solely on negative aspects of the proposal.
- Use neutral, professional language. Avoid harsh, discriminatory or offensive wording.
- Ensure your feedback is constructive and useful for the applicant, even if it is not addressed to them directly.
- Do not disclose your identity, for example by mentioning your research lab, university, etc.
- If you are asked to give a score, make sure your comments are consistent with the score.
- If you are evaluating more than one application, strive to remain as consistent as possible throughout the entire review process.
