Since January 2021, GISMO has also formed the basis for the Research Explorer, accessible via http://research.ugent.be. This portal allows internal and external stakeholders to find information about various aspects of research at Ghent University: which researchers and research groups are affiliated with Ghent University and what their expertise is, what research infrastructure is offered, which projects (past and present) are being carried out, and which publications are available via the repository.

Map of the world

An update in the summer of 2026 introduced a new ‘Global Research’ button (which can also be accessed via the ‘Global Collaboration’ group tile at the ‘Projects’ entity level).

An iframe displays a world map that you can zoom in on and filter, with a corresponding list of results below:

• Currently, an overview is provided of research projects (from 2007 onwards) for which the necessary country information is available in GISMO (in addition to the standard mandatory metadata).
  • Projects involving a partner or organisation from a country other than Belgium (determined at the level of the project as a whole, rather than assessed on a work package-by-work package basis) or which have a particular connection with a specific country (e.g. research into a specific national situation). In GISMO, these are generally indicated by the relationship type ‘in collaboration with’.
  • This mainly concerns projects with EU funding or those within Global Outreach (Global Minds, VLIRUOS, etc.).
  • The following project types are not taken into account: contracts, externally managed projects, and doctoral projects (= registration as student)
• Is your project missing and would you like to see it listed? Please contact gismo@ugent.be and request that a country or region be added via the project profile.

Use

• Default view at 81%. Also available: zoom in/out, fit to page, open in full-screen mode
• The more projects linked to a particular country, the larger the bubble for that country. When you hover over the bubble with the mouse, the name of the country and the number of projects are displayed.
• Zoom in or out (using the mouse scroll wheel or the menu in the top right-hand corner of the map). Move the map using drag and drop. 
• Some drop-down lists contain a lot of data. Use the search field to narrow down the list (the list updates immediately).
• You can filter by: Faculty and department (based on the (co-)promotor), Country and region, Topic (searches are carried out using discipline codes and available keywords), Year, Funding (based on existing categorisation)
