[FWO] Oproep SBO gelanceerd: Strategisch Basisonderzoek | Call SBO launched: Strategic Basic Research

SBO-projecten: FWO-Vlaanderen lanceert de oproep voor 2026 met uiterste indiendatum vrijdag 25 september 2026 (17u).

De nadruk van strategisch basisonderzoek ligt op risicovol, inventief en vernieuwend onderzoek, waarbij het (strategisch belang en de omvang van de lange termijn valorisatieperspectieven in Vlaanderen duidelijk aanwezig zijn. Het SBO-programma heeft 2 finaliteitsdelen: economische of maatschappelijke finaliteit.

 

Nieuw: SBO oproep voor onderzoeksprojecten in het domein van Veiligheid- en Defensie.

Deze oproep volgt de regelgeving van de reguliere oproep.

 

Belangrijkste aandachtspunten

  • Oproep 2026 is bottom-up binnen alle oriëntatieroadmaps van de VISD
  • Het onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd voor een consortium (minstens 2 aanvragende rechtspersonen)
  • Participatie van niet-Vlaamse kennisinstellingen en bedrijven én de aanwerving van personeelsleden is beperkt tot EU-, EFTA- of NAVO-landen
  • Het toevoegen van een risicoanalyse voor technologieoverdracht
  • Het nieuwe kanaal krijgt een eigen overkoepelende commissie 

Verkennend gesprek

  • Een aanvraag indienen met UGent? Vraag een verkennend gesprek aan via karen.cure@ugent.be.
  • Potentiële indieners kunnen ook een verkennend gesprek aanvragen bij het FWO. Bezorg hen een kort abstract en de belangrijkste vragen (max. 1 A4) op sbo@fwo.be en opgave van een aantal mogelijke data waarop dit gesprek kan plaatsvinden (via video-conference).

Indienen

Alle aanvragen worden ingediend via het e-loket van FWO. De hoofdpromotor zal het project moeten aanmaken, de administratieve gegevens invullen, de bijlagen opladen en indienen bij zijn onthaalinstelling. De onthaalinstelling dient, na akkoord, finaal in bij FWO. Dit akkoord vervangt de intentieverklaring.

Vooraanmelding

Ten laatste vrijdag 11 september 2026 (17u) moet een eerste versie van uw project ingediend worden, via het e-loket. Deze vooraanmelding is verplicht en moet minstens volgende gegevens bevatten:

  • tabblad “General”: projecttitel en looptijd
  • tabblad “Samenvatting”: niet-vertrouwelijke samenvatting en beschrijving van de wetenschappelijke en valorisatie innovatiedoelstellingen
  • tabblad “Applicants": volledige samenstelling van het projectconsortium
  • tabblad “Peer Review”: specificatie van de onderzoekstopic, keuze van het thematisch SBO-expertpanel en eventueel te wraken deskundigen (max. 3)
  • tabblad “Consent”: toestemming geven door de aanvaarding van de verklaring

 De effectieve indiening bij het FWO gebeurt door DOZA tegen ten laatste 25 september 2026 (17u).

Voorwaarden

  • Onderzoekers voldoen als ZAP-lid aan Art. 10 van het reglement van fundamenteel onderzoek.
  • Er mag maar één project ingediend worden als promotor-woordvoerder of copromotor. Deze beperking geldt overkoepelend voor de reguliere oproep en de defensie oproep.
  • Het totaal van de aangevraagde en lopende projecten mag niet groter zijn dan twee.

Budget

Het maximum aan te vragen bedrag bedraagt 425.000 per projectpartner per jaar.

Het totaal projectbudget ligt rond 1,7 miljoen (exclusief overhead).

SBO projects: FWO-Flanders launches call for 2026 with deadline Friday 25 September 2026 (17:00).

The emphasis of strategic basic research is on high-risk, inventive and innovative research, where the (strategic) importance and scope of long-term valorization prospects in Flanders are clearly present. The SBO program has 2 finality parts: economic or societal finality.

 

NEW: SBO strategic basic research projects security and defence

This call follows the same guidelines as the regular call.

 

Key points to note

  • The 2026 call is bottom-up across all VISD orientation roadmap.
  • The research must be carried out by a consortium (at least two applying legal entities).
  • Participation of non-Flemish knowledge institutions and companies and newly recruited staff members is must be based in EU, EFTA, or NATO countries.
  • A risk analysis for technology transfer is required.

  • The new funding channel will have its own steering committee

Exploratory interview

  • Preparing an application with UGent? Request an exploratory interview at karen.cure@ugent.be.
  • Potential applicants can also request an exploratory interview with the FWO. Provide them with a short abstract and the most important questions (max. 1 A4) at sbo@fwo.be and an indication of a number of possible dates on which this interview can take place (via video conference).

Submission

All applications are submitted via FWO's e-loket. The principal promoter will have to create the project, complete the administrative data, upload the attachments and submit it to his/her receiving institution. After approval, the receiving institution submits the final application to FWO. This approval replaces the letter of intent.

Pre-registration

A first version of your project must be submitted via the e-loket no later than Friday 11 September 2026 (17:00). This pre-registration is mandatory and must contain at least the following information:

  • “General” tab: project title and duration
  • “Summary” tab: non-confidential summary and detailed scientific and valorisation innovation objectives
  • “Applicants” tab: full composition of the project consortium
  • “Peer Review” tab: specification of the research topic, selection of the thematic SBO expert panel and experts to be avoided (optional, max. 3)
  • “Consent” tab: consent should be given by accepting the declaration

The effective submission to the FWO is done by DOZA by 25 September 2026 (17:00) at the latest.

Conditions

  • Researchers must have a ZAP appointment complying with the provisions of Art. 10 of the regulations for fundamental research projects
  • Only one application may be submitted by a supervisor-spokesperson or co-supervisor. This constraint applies jointly to both the regular call and the defence call.
  • The sum of submitted and ongoing SBO projects by one supervisor-spokesperson or co-supervisor must not exceed two. 

Budget

The maximum amount that can be requested is 425,000 per project partner per year.

The total project budget is around 1.7 million (excluding overhead).
