[BOF] Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds - cofinanciering voor Chinese doctoraatsstudenten met een CSC-preference beurs (2026) | Special Research Fund - Co-funding for Chinese PhD Candidates Holding a CSC-Preference scholarship (2026)
De Universiteit Gent (UGent) heeft een samenwerkingsovereenkomst afgesloten met de China Scholarship Council (CSC) om de UGent te promoten als gastinstelling voor Chinese doctoraatsstudenten. Deze samenwerkingsovereenkomst heeft een looptijd van vijf jaar, van 30 november 2023 tot 30 november 2028. In het kader van deze overeenkomst financieren UGent en CSC samen jaarlijks een 50 tal nieuwe CSC doctoraatsstudenten. Studenten die geselecteerd worden via het UGent-CSC preferentieprogramma worden vrijgesteld van het betalen van studiegeld (tuition & bench fees). Daarnaast ontvangen de geselecteerde studenten een aanvullende beurs van de UGent (Bijzonder Onderzoekfonds), bovenop hun CSC-beurs om zo een minimaal maandinkomen van 1610 euro te garanderen (cf. beleid van de UGent inzake aanbevolen financiële steun voor doctoraatsstudenten).
Wie kan een aanvraag indienen voor het preferentieprogramma?
Het preferentieprogramma is enkel toegankelijk voor studenten die een doctoraatsdiploma willen behalen aan de Universiteit Gent. Hieronder worden ook de kandidaten begrepen die een gezamenlijk doctoraatsdiploma beogen aan zowel de Universiteit Gent als hun Chinese universiteit.
Uitwisselings- of gastdoctoraatsstudenten komen niet in aanmerking voor het preferentieprogramma.
Enkel studenten die een masterdiploma hebben (of zullen behalen) kunnen een aanvraag indienen voor het preferentieprogramma. Studenten die op basis van een bachelordiploma reeds zijn ingeschreven als PhD-student (in China) komen ook in aanmerking (cf. Joint PhD studenten).
Enkel startende doctoraatsstudenten zonder CSC-beurs - d.w.z. studenten die nog niet eerder een CSC-beurs ontvingen en die, indien ze ingeschreven zijn als doctoraatsstudent aan de UGent, maximaal één jaar hebben voltooid op het ogenblik van de deadline - komen in aanmerking voor het preferentieprogramma.
UGent promotoren kunnen maximum 1 preferentieaanvraag steunen.
Kandidaten voor het preferentieprogramma moeten op het ogenblik van de UGent deadline (16 december 2025) gestart zijn met de toelatingsprocedure tot het doctoraat (admission procedure).
De toelatingsprocedure moet niet zijn afgewerkt op het ogenblik van de UGent deadline - maar moet dat wel zijn op het ogenblik van de CSC deadline (maart 2026).
Preselectie & Selectie:
UGent preselecteert de kandidaten, CSC voert de finale selectie uit.

Ghent University (UGent) has signed a cooperation agreement with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) to promote UGent as a host institution for Chinese PhD students. This cooperation agreement runs for five years, from November 30, 2023, to November 30, 2028. Under this agreement, UGent and CSC co-finance about 50 new CSC PhD students annually. Students selected through the UGent-CSC preference program are exempted from paying tuition fees (tuition & bench fees). Additionally, selected students receive an additional grant from UGent (Special Research Fund), on top of their CSC scholarship, to ensure a minimum monthly income of 1,610 euros (cf. UGent policy on recommended financial support for PhD students).
Who Can Apply for the Preference Program?
The preference program is only open to students who want to obtain a PhD degree at Ghent University. This includes candidates aiming for a joint PhD degree at both Ghent University and their Chinese university.
Exchange or visiting PhD students who are only registered as PhD students at a Chinese university and wish to obtain their PhD degree solely at their home university in China are not considered joint PhD students by UGent and are not eligible for the preference program.
Only students who have (or will obtain) a master's degree can apply for the preference program. Students who are already enrolled as PhD students based on a bachelor's degree (in China) are also eligible to apply (cf. Joint PhD students).
This preference program is open exclusively to freshman PhD students, i.e., starting PhD students who have not yet received a CSC scholarship and have completed a maximum of one year as a PhD student at Ghent university by the deadline.
UGent supervisors can support a maximum of one preference application.
Candidates must have started the admission procedure for the PhD (‘admission procedure’) at the time of the UGent deadline (latest December 16, 2025).
The admission procedure does not need to be completed by the UGent deadline but must be completed by the CSC deadline (March 2026).
Pre-selection & Selection
UGent pre-selects the candidates, and CSC makes the final selection.

Deadline for CSC Preference Program: March 2026 (please check the CSC website for exact dates).
The earliest start date for these scholarships is October 1, 2026.
