[BOF] Doctoraatsbeurzen voor kandidaten uit Global South landen (DOS) - oproep 2026

De oproep BOF Doctoraatsbeurzen voor kandidaten uit Global South landen (DOS) staat momenteel open. De deadline om projectvoorstellen in te dienen is 17 februari 2026 om 23u59 (Belgische tijd).

Deze beurzen zijn zogenaamde 'sandwichbeurzen':

De kandidaat is verplicht om minimaal 2 verblijven aan de UGent af te wisselen met 1 verblijf aan de partnerinstelling in een Global South land (zie landenlijst).
Het doctoraatsonderzoek beslaat 48 maanden waarvan er 24 maanden aan de partnerinstelling plaatsvinden en 24 maanden aan de UGent.
Enkel de periodes die worden doorgebracht aan de UGent worden gefinancierd door de UGent.
Voor de maanden aan de partnerinstelling voorziet de UGent geen financiële ondersteuning maar dient er aan de partnerinstelling cofinanciering te zijn (minimum 24 maanden) in de vorm van een (niet-UGent) beurs of salaris.

Om in aanmerking te komen voor financiering dienen kandidaten aan volgende voorwaarden te voldoen:

Kandidaten moeten afkomstig zijn – en over de nationaliteit beschikken – uit één van de geselecteerde Global South landen.
Er dient een bewijs voorgelegd te worden dat kandidaten aan de partnerinstelling in één van de geselecteerde Global South landen fulltime aan hun doctoraatsonderzoek kunnen werken gedurende 24 maanden. Hierbij is een maximale belasting (les- en andere opdrachten) van 10 % is toegelaten.
Alle onderzoeksdomeinen komen in aanmerking, maar voorkeur wordt gegeven aan onderwerpen die relevant zijn in het kader van de Zuid-Noord context (de mate waarin de doelstellingen van een voorstel overeenstemmen met de behoeften van de begunstigden, de mogelijkheden tot synergie, de mondiale prioriteiten en het beleid van partners en donoren)
Programma is bedoeld voor studenten die aan het begin van hun PhD staan. In beperkte mate is toegestaan dat doctoraatstudenten reeds een voortraject hebben afgelegd.

De UGent wenst meer vrouwelijke onderzoekers aan te moedigen om deze beurs aan te vragen. UGent promotoren kunnen maximaal 2 kandidaten per oproep ondersteunen op voorwaarde dat ze van een verschillend geslacht zijn.

Doctoral Scholarships for candidates from the Global South – Call 2026

The BOF call Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South (DOS) has recently been launched. The deadline for applications is 17 February 2026 at 23:59 (Belgian time).

These grants take the form of a so called ‘sandwich’ scholarship:

Students are obliged to divide the Ghent University scholarship into minimum 2 different research stays in Ghent (and need to return at least once to the partner university in a Global South country (see country list) in between (= ‘sandwich- schedule’).
The candidate obtains a scholarship for maximum 24 months to work within a span of 48 months on an alternating basis on the PhD at Ghent University ('North') and at the partner university or research centre in the Global South ('South').
Only for the periods the scholarship holder works at Ghent University the scholarship holder will receive a monthly income from Ghent University.
The rest of the PhD research is done at the partner university in the South, for which no funding is provided through this scholarship. For this part of the PhD research (minimum 24 months) students must prove that they will be co-financed at the partner university (e.g. fulltime PhD scholarship or salary).

To be admissible for this call, all of the following requirements must be met:

Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – a Global South country (see county list)
There must be a guarantee that the candidate will be able to work fulltime on the PhD project at the partner university in a selected Global South country (South) for a period of 24 months. Applicants can dedicate maximum 10 % of their time (fulltime appointment) to other tasks (teaching and other tasks)
No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant within the South-South context. South-North Context relevance relates to the extent to which the objectives of a proposal are consistent with beneficiaries’ requirements, synergy opportunities, global priorities and partners’ and donors’ policies.
This program is meant for students at the beginning of their PhD. To a limited extent, PhD students are allowed to have already completed preliminary research.

Ghent University encourages female researchers to apply for this scholarship. A Ghent University supervisor can support maximum 2 candidates per call on condition they are of a different gender.
