SciFinder-n

SciFinder-n is the new interface for the classic version of SciFinder. SciFinder-n provides easy access to information in Chemical Abstracts Services (CAS) resources: journal citations and abstracts, substance data, chemical reactions, regulatory data, chemical suppliers, and biomedical literature.

Access

This database is accessible within the Ghent University network. Login to your UGent-account at lib.ugent.be, search for the database in our catalogue, click on 'view online'. You need a personal account to consult Scifinder-n: visit the Scifinder registration form, click on 'Accept' and fill in the Registration Information. Once registered go to SciFinder-n to sign in..

Search Tips

All Search

Conduct an All search to find substances, reactions, references, and suppliers that match your query. You can enter a text query (e.g., keyword, CAS Registry Number, patent number) that identifies the subject of interest, or draw/import a structure query.

If both text and structure queries are present for the All search, reactions and suppliers will only match the structure query (text query is ignored); substances and references will match both text and structure queries.

Conducting an All search retrieves substances, reactions, references, and suppliers that match your query. The two best results for each search type are displayed on the All Search Type page.

Text query

Enter the text into the search field, and then click the magnifying glass to submit the query. You may enter multiple CAS RNs separated by a space, no commas or other punctuation. The search field has a 2000-character limit.

Structure Query

To draw a structure query, click the 'Draw' button in the search field. You have the option to draw the structure using CAS Draw or ChemDoodle. Select the preferred editor from the menu in the upper-left corner. Draw the structure, and then click 'OK'.

When a search is completed, you can view and filter the results, change the result display, retrieve related data, and keep/remove, combine with saved items, download, email, or save selected results.

Export

To export citations to EndNote: after you conduct a search, select your references by ticking their boxes. In the upper right corner of your screen: click the 'Download Results' button download results. A 'Download Reference Results' dialogue box appears. Change the default settings so that File Type 'Citation (.ris)' is selected. Click the 'Download' button. Click 'Open' to import into EndNote. Your quotes will now be saved in EndNote. Don't forget: in order to use EndNote via Athena, you also have to start all your other applications (browser Internet Explorer, Word, ....) via Athena.

Alerts & saving searches

In SciFinder-n, you can save your search and any selected answers. This allows you to easily pick up where you left off. Saved search items are stored on the 'Your Saved Items' page.

Click the 'Save and Alert' button:  save & alert

Name the saved result set/search. Create Alert: Under 'Alert Frequency', select whether to receive optional 'As Available' (new content added), 'Weekly', or 'Monthly' email alerts of new results that match the search being saved. Click the 'Save' button. The saved results/search will appear on the 'Your Saved Items' page with any alert settings and tagging you specified. The 'Your Saved Items' page is also where you manage the alerts and tags for the saved results/searches.
