Scholarly article: where to find it?

Search a bibliographic database

The best way to find qualitative scholarly articles is to use a bibliographic database. There are multidisciplinary databases (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science) as well as discipline-specific databases (e.g. PubMed for health sciences). These databases give an overview of published scholarly information, whether or not Ghent University can access the full text. Google Scholar helps you find the full text of scholarly publications available online.

In the library catalogue you can find a list of the databases accessible within Ghent University. Some databases are only accessible within one faculty, others within the UGent network or even widely accessible. This is always indicated.

Find the full text

Articles in electronic journals available at UGent, can be accessed immediately in full text through the SFX button or the button "Find full text" on the detail page of a reference in some databases. Some examples:

Web of Science
NCBI / Pubmed
Sociological Abstracts

If there's no full text button, look up the article up in Google Scholar to see if you can find an online full text. Make sure to log in to the UGent network for the best results.

Still no results? Look up the journal the article is published in via the library catalogue lib.ugent.be. It's possible to request a scan of articles only available in printed journals in the UGent collection. The video below explains how to do so.

If you can't find the publication you are looking for in one of the UGent libraries, you can request it from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
